Chairs

The famous wooden chairs, known for their sturdiness and their comfort, were manufactured in Phini until recently.

Chair making is a difficult job and for this reason no one is occupied with their construction today.

The craftsman had to tour all around the forest so as to select woods from strawberry trees and golden oaks, parch them and leave them for several months to dry really well, and then use them.

They used no machinery or glue for their manufacture but only age-old tools, a slice bar and an auger and their two hands. The result however was handmade, wooden chairs that lasted for a century.

Unfortunately there is no one in Phini today to practice this craft and -as a result -another traditional craft of Cyprus has vanished.
